Your infant needs a healthy diet to properly develop both mentally and physically. At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Sienna Plantation in Missouri City, we have been managing an infant care program for many years and we offer the best in infant care. Our infant care program accommodates infants as young as six weeks old.

Here we discuss the developmental benefits of feeding your infant with breast milk and when is the right time to shift to solid food.

Breast milk

Most doctors recommend breast milk for infants because it is packed with the right nutrition and is specifically suited to your child. It also has antibodies that help protect your baby’s immune system which leads to less allergies. Studies show that breast milk contains less insulin than formula and that an infant who breast feeds has more leptin in their system. Leptin is a hormone that regulates the amount of fat that is stored in the body.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping an infant on breast milk for the first year. Breast milk alone is sufficient to support optimal growth and development for at least the first six months after birth.

Solids

Introducing your child to solid food can start at the age of six months, or when your pediatrician deems it appropriate. Your child can still be on breast milk as you begin to introduce him or her to solid foods. Visit your doctor to find out which foods your child should start eating. Two signs your child is ready for solid foods:

  • When your child is able to swallow food. If he or she spits out the food, then they may not yet be ready.
  • When he or she has enough hand and eye coordination, meaning your child can look at the food, pick it up and put it in his or her mouth.
