Nutrition plays a vital role in your child’s early brain development, especially in the womb. Here’s some great advice on how to feed your infant’s brain during this critical time.

How does a lack of nutrients affect fetal brain development?

Inadequate nourishment during pregnancy may result in significant setbacks to the mental and physical growth of your infant. In addition to this, a malnourished child may have more difficulty in overcoming challenges, causing reduced learning, during these critical developmental years. This results in slower language acquisition, lower IQ, slower development of fine motor skills, and generally poor overall academic performance.

How can I ensure proper nutritional support for fetal brain development?

  • Increase intakes: During pregnancy an expectant mother will need to take in around 300 extra calories on average. Your doctor will prescribe an eating plan that has all the essential nutrients and calories to meet your growing infant’s needs.
  • Prenatal vitamins: A high quality prenatal vitamin will ensure that your infant gets enough folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin C, zinc and other essential supplements. These nutrients may not always be included in all the foods that you consume daily.
  • Omega 3s: Avocados and oily fish, like tuna and salmon, are great sources of these nutrients, which help to build the membrane within your child’s brain.
  • Antioxidants: Fresh berries, fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, are the nutrients that support you, and your infant’s immune system. They also help to protect your infant’s brain tissue from damage.
