Reading with Your Preschooler

Posted on 08-25-2017

It’s never too early to start reading with your preschooler. While your child will gain reading skills when they begin preschool, reading at home as an enjoyable activity is sure to instill learning and a love of stories.

Make it fun

When reading with your preschooler, always make it a pleasant time—never force it if your child is having trouble concentrating or too tired. Mention how much you enjoy reading with them and try to let this be at the same time every day to form the habit.

Make it fun—use funny voices and be as interactive as possible to get your child involved with the story and the words. If your little one has a favorite story, don’t hesitate to re-read it.

Get your child involved

Getting your child involved is very important during this stage. Let them make predictions about what is going to happen and point out pictures and different objects on the page. Repeating words that rhyme and pausing for them to say words with you is key for an interactive reading experience.

Pace yourself

Always let your child go at his own pace—every preschooler learns at a different rate and in a variety of ways. It’s most important that you look for what works best for your little one and encourage this with positivity, always making reading a fun experience to look forward to.
